About This Document
Tidely UK (formerly TideMan) is a mobile companion that helps UK coastal visitors understand tide times, bathing water quality, weather, swell and other environmental signals near their current location. This page combines the in-app Terms of Use and our privacy commitments so that Google Play reviewers, Apple App Store reviewers and Tidely UK users have a single, self-contained reference.
By installing or using Tidely UK from either Google Play or the Apple App Store you confirm that you have read and agree to the Terms & Conditions and the Data Privacy information below. If you disagree with any part of these terms, please uninstall the app and discontinue use.
Terms of Use
Tidely UK provides tide, weather and environmental information sourced from reputable third-party providers. While every reasonable effort is made to ensure accuracy and reliability, we cannot guarantee that all data will be correct, complete or up to date at all times.
The app is provided “as is” and should not be relied upon as the sole source of safety-critical information. Users remain responsible for their own decisions and personal safety when undertaking coastal or marine activities.
Tidely UK, its developers and operators accept no liability for any loss, damage or injury arising from reliance on the app, its content or any interruption of service.
You agree not to misuse Tidely UK, attempt to reverse engineer any part of the service, or resell the data we surface. All third-party data sources retain full ownership of their respective intellectual property. We may update or withdraw the app (or specific features) at any time without notice if data providers change their terms, if legal requirements shift, or to protect users.
Data Privacy & Safety
Tidely UK uses Google Analytics to collect anonymous usage statistics that help us improve app performance and user experience. No personally identifiable information is collected. If you enable personalised advertising, Google may use device identifiers and general demographic or interest data to show ads that are more relevant to you. You can change your consent preferences or opt out of personalised ads at any time in the app’s Settings.
We do not run user accounts, and we do not store any user data outside the app itself. Cached tide, map, and forecast data live only on your device and can be cleared at any time from Settings > Storage. Apart from the optional analytics events described here, Tidely UK does not copy your personal information to a remote server.
Data We Access
- Approximate Location (foreground permission only) — Required to locate nearby tide stations, weather observations, bathing water quality reports, and map tiles. Location checks happen on device; coordinates are sent only to the third-party providers listed below when you actively request local data.
- Device identifiers for ads (Google AdMob) — Used solely if you enable personalised ads. Without consent we show non-personalised advertising that does not use tracking identifiers.
- Anonymous usage analytics (Google Analytics for Firebase) — Disabled by default and enabled only after you opt in. Events describe screens viewed, widget taps, and crash diagnostics; no precise location, name, email, or identifier is included.
- Local storage — We store your preferences (units, favourites, consent choices) and cached datasets directly on the device so the app can operate offline. This information never leaves the device unless you back up your phone through your operating system.
Third-Party Providers That Receive Location Data
When you grant location permission, Tidely UK may transmit your coarse latitude and longitude to the following providers strictly to fulfil your request for weather, marine or tidal data near you. Each provider processes the data under its own privacy policy:
- OpenWeatherMap (current weather, delivered via our secure Cloudflare Worker proxy) — Receives the coordinates you select so it can return live temperature, wind and visibility data.
- Open-Meteo Forecast & Marine APIs — Receive coordinates to generate hourly forecasts, UV index, swell, wave height, and sea surface temperature.
- UK Hydrographic Office / Admiralty Tide API — Accessed through our worker service to fetch tidal predictions for the nearest station to your location.
We do not sell or monetise location data. Coordinates are transmitted over HTTPS, are never stored on our own servers, and are cached only in memory long enough to service your request. Each third party keeps its data for the period defined in its privacy notice (OpenWeatherMap, Open-Meteo, UK Hydrographic Office).
Advertising & Analytics Choices
- Toggle personalised ads and analytics at any time under Settings > Privacy. Changes take effect immediately and are stored only on your device.
- Anonymous usage information flows to Google Analytics for Firebase only after you opt in. You can opt out at any time and previously sent events remain anonymous.
- Tidely UK may use Google AdMob to deliver ads. Personalised ads require both your consent and Google’s own user-level permission dialogs where mandated. Without consent, AdMob receives only contextual data (screen category, language, coarse region).
Retention, Security & Children
- We retain only on-device caches and preferences; removing the app or clearing the cache deletes them.
- Optional analytics data is stored by Google for the durations described in their service terms; we do not combine it with any other identifier.
- Tidely UK is designed for general audiences but should not be used by children under 13 without parental guidance. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.
- All communications with third-party APIs use HTTPS. Sensitive keys are stored in a secure proxy (Cloudflare Worker) so that no secrets ship in the mobile binary.
Apple App Store Disclosures
The iOS version of Tidely UK (bundle identifier com.curious12.TidelyUK) is distributed through
the Apple App Store and abides by Apple’s App Store Review Guidelines, App Tracking Transparency framework, and
privacy questionnaire. The same functionality ships on both platforms, but Apple requires an explicit summary
of what we collect, whether it is linked to the user, and whether it is used for tracking.
The statements we submit inside App Store Connect are captured below for easy reference.
| Data category | Purpose & notes | Linked to you? | Used for tracking? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Approximate Location | Required to surface tide stations, bathing-water quality reports, and marine forecasts near you. Data stays on-device unless you actively request information for your coordinates, in which case it is sent only to the third parties listed above over HTTPS and not stored by Tidely UK. | No | No |
| Product Interaction (screen views, taps, session duration) | Anonymous analytics collected via Google Analytics for Firebase after you opt in. Events let us see which widgets are popular so we can improve the experience. They are aggregated and not combined with any identity data. | No | No |
| Advertising Identifiers (IDFA) | Requested only if you first enable personalised ads inside Settings > Privacy and then grant the iOS tracking permission prompt. The identifier is used by Google AdMob to deliver more relevant ads and is not stored by Tidely UK. | OptionalDevice-level only | Yes |
We declare “Data Not Collected” for contact information, financial info, health data, precise location, photos, camera, microphone, and any other categories not explicitly listed. Tidely UK never creates user accounts and does not upload your personal content to our servers.
App Tracking Transparency & Ads
- We display the iOS tracking permission dialog only after you turn on personalised ads inside Settings > Privacy. If you keep the toggle off, Apple’s ATT prompt never appears.
- Declining the prompt (or disabling tracking later) forces Tidely UK to show non-personalised ads and immediately resets any advertising identifier that AdMob could access.
- You can revisit the choice from iOS Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking > Tidely UK or by changing the in-app privacy toggles.
iOS Permission Summary
- Location While Using the App (Approximate only) — Needed to locate the nearest tide stations and weather sources. We do not request “Always” or background location access, and you can revoke the permission at any time via iOS Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Tidely UK.
- Tracking (Advertising Identifier) — Requested only when you opt into personalised ads. Turning the toggle off or choosing “Ask App Not to Track” means no identifier is accessed.
- All other iOS permissions — We do not request access to contacts, calendars, reminders, photos, camera, microphone, Bluetooth, motion/fitness data, or files.
End User License
Tidely UK on iOS is offered under Apple’s Standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement. Curious 12 (the Tidely UK publisher) remains responsible for support and privacy inquiries, and no custom EULA supersedes Apple’s standard terms at this time.
Your Choices & Rights
- Revoke location permission via your device settings to stop all location-based lookups.
- Clear cached data any time from Settings > Storage within the app or by deleting the app.
- Use the in-app privacy toggles to opt in or out of analytics and personalised ads.
- Refer to each third-party provider’s privacy policy for instructions on exercising your rights with that service (e.g. OpenWeatherMap, Open-Meteo, UK Hydrographic Office, Google).
